Something Broke - Storyboarding

Storyboarding has officially BEGUN. Although my drawings are shitty so far, I swear to make them the best I could get them. Timing the panels is a bit tricky... but eh, I'm trying my best to set up the scenes (which is an important step).

PONYVILLE - ALL IS NORMAL - STORYBOARD (These are links, btw)
NEW (DEC. 8): CLOUDSDALE - YOUNG FLIERS COMPETITION - STORYBOARD

My own thoughts so far of what I have done... well, the comic panels don't exactly show everything that happens in each panel, so there will be a bit of things that aren't all that legible. Like the first shot, Rainbow Dash wont be on the screen at that moment; it'll open up to clouds, then Dash will burst right through them. Next panel, Dash does a loop, and a pose. The next panel, I think it was a smart idea to draw Dash a few times in the panel showing what she's doing (attempting a sonic rainboom). Maybe I shouldn't use a different panel for this, but I wanted to show Dash get flung to the sky, and disappearing. Next panel shows Pinkie Pie. I made it so that she was watching Dash the whole time. She wanted to go meet up with her, so... next panel shows Pinkie bouncing along a path, and then finds Dash laying down in the grass. Pinkie smiles, glad that she found Dash. Dash gets up and smiles back (that DEFINITELY isn't really shown at all).

So anyways, they both decide to go out pranking. Pinkie Pie wonders who they're actually pranking (dunno if it shows all that well... unless you watched the episode that it's in). Helpless victim in this case is Fluttershy. When Pinkie finds out that they were just about to prank Fluttershy, Pinkie will spit out the ball (used to spray water I assume), and tells Dash that it isn't a good idea. Dash gives in, and will turn to Pinkie wondering who to prank next, and turns to Pinkie. Pinkie Smiles. "?" appears next to Dash since she doesn't know why Pinkie is laughing. Pinkie will point into the water, and Dash will have a good look at herself, and smile. Then they brohoof.

From what everyone could probably tell, I'm not all that great at drawing backgrounds. I tried to do some details on Sugarcube Corner to make it look like it... but yeah. The camera will follow the "Poni" into Sugarcube Corner. I want to have a few more ponies around on the street as well, but the "Poni" is the main focus. She'll walk into the shop, look around, and walk up to Pinkie. She points her hoof at a cupcake, and makes a purchase. First dropping the "3 bits," Pinkie will swipe off the bits, and hoof her the cupcake. Pinkie then waves "goodbye" happily.

Some of the panels may move a bit fast here, but then again, I tried to make them stay as long as possible to go along with the timing to the song. I may not even use the pose that Dash made in the first frame at "Every pony come look here." I didn't like it all that much. Besides, the next frame will show "Rainbow Dash is full of fear" anyways. Next panel comes by a bit fast, but it'll show Derpy flying in, and dropping a newspaper titled the "Equestria Daily" It shows that there's a young flyers competition coming up.

Ugh, at this point, everything should be more or less self explanatory. With the "Help me chase away my fears" part, I honestly didn't really know what to put at first. So... well, since this part of the story talks about Rainbow Dash more, I have it focused on her for this point. She's being made fun of by another pony. "Rainbow Crash..." etc.

---

NEW STUFFS (DEC. 8)
I just posted the next part, Cloudsdale - Young Fliers Competition. In this, everything should be a lot more self explanatory. This section was made for VERY subtle animation. In other words, it's not really all that animated much, but it tells the story mainly with actions in a comic book style, rather than with animations in each panel. The style of the art is also a bit different as well, but the characters are all recognizable. Also, Jade from "Super Filly Adventure" makes her cameo. It was a pretty random decision to even include her. In the show, you don't actually get to see the school at Cloudsdale. This would be some sort of young pegasi soccer of some sort, and thus I used a Super Mario Sluggers as a reference for the second image of that. As you can probably tell, some scenes in this were taken from Sonic Rainboom, but I had to make up a few of my own twists. Pinkie never really walked with Rainbow Dash, and I wanted the characters to have more of a connection between each other, since the story is really about Pinkie Pie, and also a dash of Rainbow Dash (get it? a dash? eh, whatever. stupid pun).

Anyways, the next scene will include some of Pinkie's back story, and some abuse. This section will also be properly storyboarded, and not in the comic book styles that I've been doing thus far. Look forward to it!

--------------------------------------

So yeah, if anyone has any questions, concerns, advice, critique, or whatever, send me an email at animatedjay6@gmail.com. I'll be continuing to storyboard the next section, which should see a bit of a different art style than the one I used in this part, but it'll still be much like a comic style. I honestly can't wait until I get into the more gruesome stuff later on...

Idea Dump (Something Broke)

This will constantly be updated as I keep coming up with ideas. I'm open to suggestions, and critique before I end up storyboarding everything. I may end up posting a bit of the storyboard here too. Only reason I don't have the first act in here is because I pretty much have that section done. I made it kinda like an animated credits section.

Update Nov. 12, 2011: I'm finished with writing all the scenes out, but I can't do the storyboard without some kind of feedback. THIS MEANS I NEED YOUR INPUT. Is this good? What throws you off on this, if anything? I'd like to know anything or everything before I start drawing out the storyboard. If anyone reading this has any suggestions, fire them away. Or rather, shoot an email to animatedjay6@gmail.com. Here's some of my recent drawings of ponies just for practice: 1, 2, 3, 4.

RECOMMENDATION: If you want to help, you should have at least watched a few episodes of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, including Sonic Rainboom, Party of One, and Cutie Mark Chronicles. Also, read the fanfic "Cupcakes." (It's basically MLP meets Sweeney Todd...). I'll also state the obvious too: listen to Something Broke. So if you want to help, you should have at least done all of this.

If ANYONE would want to help with backgrounds, that would be great. Show me your works, and if you're willing to help, that's great! (I'm not offering any payment though... it's kinda volunteer work). I'm getting a friend of mine (Hax Mega) to try writing out some newspaper articles that will appear in "Practice Makes Perfect (Crime)." I'm likely going to call them the "Equestria Daily Newspaper."

2. PONYVILLE - ALL IS NORMAL
----------------------------
Animated Comic Book style

Rainbow Dash flying through the sky & clouds doing tricks and stunts.

Rainbow Dash attempting sonic rainboom, and fail

Pinkie Pie chasing down Rainbow Dash

Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash pulling some pranks on some ponies

"Welcome to our little town" - "street view shots," with several ponies hanging around being happy and such. Show a pony entering "Sugarcube Corner." Show same pony getting some cupcakes "inside Sugarcube Corner", buying from pinkamina.
"...About one which we call "Pinkie"" - This should be the part where it shows inside of Sugarcube Corner, and showing the pony buying cupcakes from pinkamina.

"Everypony, come look here!" - Show Rainbow Dash stressing out due to the competition.
"For the upcoming event" - Show a newpaper clipping that has its top story on the young fliers competition in Cloudsdale.
"Talented young pegasi..." - Rainbow Dash flying with Fluttershy to Cloudsdale.
"So her friends devised a plan..." - Twilight, and the remaining mane cast looking for a way to get into cloudsdale from the "LIBRARY."
"Fluttershy just wasn't loud" - Fluttershy saying "YAY" in a thought bubble or something.
"Help me chase away my fears" - Show RD getting called "rainbow crash!" by those other ponies, and show her getting a bit more stressed.

3. CLOUDSDALE - YOUNG FLIERS COMPETITION
----------------------------------------
Animated Graphic Novel Style (Grey(or something)/black)

Show the rest of the mane cast rise above the clouds in their balloon, and have rarity flying.

"She signed up, then we hit the town..." - Mane cast walking through Cloudsdale a bit
"Visited the school, we saw the sights" - show young pegasi flying around in the sky.
"So we made our way through the city..." - Mane cast walking through cloudsdale more, but also have a cut shot of Rainbow Dash feeling like shit.
"Ended up in a Rainbow Factory" - Pinkie Pie tasting the rainbow.
"Where Rarity, that pompous bitch," - Show some Rarity showing off to the pegasi.
"That she would join the comp that night" - One of the pegasis says she should join the competition in a speach bubble... There'd also be a cut to Rarity, and I think she makes a comment to that.
"Short time later, we all sat" Showing the 4 mane cast characters -that aren't in the competition- sitting on the side watching.
"Waiting for our favorite cat" - Showing Rainbow in the fetal pose.
"If only we knew what we'd do" - Show Rainbow and Rarity coming out into the stadium.

4. The Rainboom - Awakening
---------------------------
Old Movie Style (grainy, black lines and stuff)

Before the lyrics come up, show Rarity flying up to the sky, and beaming down a rainbow light upon the stadium. Show Rainbow Dash speeding up into the sky. Then back to Rarity, and her wings burn out, and she reacts, and falls.

"Rarity fell, and Rainbow went after..." - Self explanitory? Rainbow speeding off to save Rarity.
"...the audience silent." - Show the mane group in the crowd.
"Rainbow Dash sped till she..." - Show Rainbow Dash speeding, showing the cone around Rainbow Dash.
"Out came a ring..." - Sonic Rainboom. SHOW COLOURS.
"They always said that a rainboom..." - Rainbow Dash saves Rarity. Rainbow trailing behind Dash.
"Pinkie, however, had seen it before" - Show Pinkie's eyes showing the rainbow reflection in them.
"Back at her home, when she was a filly" - Zoom out from Pinkie's eyes to reveal she is on the rock farm as a filly.
"Memories came back and horrors galore!" - Show the shockwave of the rainboom in Pinkie's past.

This section will feature some odd imagery of Pinkie's past, and her dad abusing her. Just stills though. Pinkie also throws her party (in the past), and then show her dad beating her. Then show young filly Pinkie running away from home.

"What to do, I'm feeling kinda woozy!" - Now show present Pinkie, baking some cupcakes.
"I haven't felt this since I was a filly." - Putting cupcakes into the oven. Oven door shutting on camera.
"Oh god, why did you ever do that, daddy..." - Show a few quick cuts of Pinkie's Dad punching, abusing Pinkie, try with a belt in his mouth too.
"I'm paranoid about the ones around me!" - Show Pinkie with Mr/Mrs Cake; selling cupcakes to customers (Bon Bon and Lyra).
"Who's gonna be the next to try and hurt me?" - Pinkie glares at Bon Bon, and Bon Bon turns around, and walks out the door with her cupcakes. Lyra follows. Bon Bon takes a bit of a look back, and continues out.
"So much for happy, yeah, so much for Pinkie!" - Show Pinkie again with a glare.
"I feel something in my trying to break free." - Colour starts to return into the scene, and the camera zooms out into her party, but only shows Pinkie there so far, and Gummy.

5. Party of One
---------------
Normalish Style, with subtle darkness
Most scenes in this scene will be taken directly from Party of One, but I also plan to reanimate the lipsync.

"About a week later..." - Show mane ponies walking into the room.
"in this instance..." - Closer up on Gummy with a party hat. He blows one of those noise maker things while giving the same blank expression.
"The party went swell..." - Show some scenes of the ponies dancing... basically scenes taken from Party of One. Show ponies leaving the party (much like in Party of One).
"This cause Pinkie to become even more paranoid..." - More scenes from Party of One. Show Pinkie going to see each of her friends, as they all reject her.
"It was at this that Pinkie finally snapped." - Close up on Pinkie looking confused.

"Secrets and Lies..." - Pinkie pacing infront of Gummy.
"I'm getting frantic, growing louder are my cries." - Pinkie yelling at Gummy. (part of the party of one scene)
"I'm getting tired of excuses and evasions" - Flashback to Rarity putting her hair in garbage, Rainbow Dash and Fluttershy making excuses... Fit whatever I can in.
"Why don't the face me..." - Pinkie infront of the spotlight shining on camera.
"What have I done, are they afraid my celebration" - Somewhat close up on Pinkie's face, same scene as the one with a spotlight.
"Make them dull" - Rainbow Dash from Ep 5 giving up from running away from Pinkie.
"Or make them sick" - Episode 4 scene where it shows everyone sick and Pinkie Pie sick.
"or make them mad" - Rainbow Dash yelling (from ep 5)
"or make them sad" - Fluttercry (bird in the hoof)
"or make them angry" - Twilight rage (Feeling Pinkie Keen)
"make them frantic" - Rainbow Dash running from Pinkie (Ep 5)
"make them crazy" - Fluttershy (at the gala)
"make them loopy" - Applejack (ep 4)
"make it painful" - Anvil dropping on Twilight's head (ep 15)
"make it sickly" - show the muffin mixture (ep 4)
"make it random" - Pinkie exploding (ep 15)
"make it icky" - Parasprites on Rainbow Dash.
"break my mind and leave me twitchy" - Show table of her new friends (party of one)
"nothing left of poor old Pinkie!..." - Pinkamina showing her creepy face from party of one.
"tell me, daddy why'd you do that to me!" - in the background of this scene, behind crazy Pinkamina, show basically what happened in her past from the previous scene with her dad beating her.
"NO!" - Pinkie snaps out of it a bit.

"What have I done? What have I done?" - Pinkie talking with Madamm Ma Flour
"I'm left alone here just a party of one" - Pinkie talking, followed by Rocky saying "Just a party of one bitch!"
"What have they done? This isn't fun!..." - Show scenes of Pinkie's friends shunning her.
"It’s all a matter of when they will come to tell me" - Show Pinkie's whole table of her inanimate object friends.
"That they despise me, that they never want to see me" - Close up on Pinkie a bit more angry.
"Well they can screw, it's time for Pinkie Pie to be free" - Show an even darker side of Pinkie for a split moment.
"Pinkamina show your scars" - Show Pinkie getting cut from a knife from her father.
"Broken bones and broken heart" - Split moment, show a blunt strike from pinkie's father on Pinkie, and pinkie collapsing.
"Give me tell me one good reason..." - At this point, Pinkie is doing the crazy Pinkie face, while in the background, there are scenes of Pinkie abuse (Gilda popping all her balloons, and driving Pinkie into the ground while she's on her crazy contraption)
"let alone an hour, minute..." - continuation of above.
"let me cling to reality one last second" - Show Pinkie struggling a bit.
"savored for me, looking for the one blue pony" - Siloette of Rainbow Dash
"RAINBOW DASH, WAIT!" - Rainbow dash comes into full view, and dashes off.

6. The Final Straw (Instrumental)
------------------
Funky style. Kinda like Venture Ponies.

Shows Pinkie chasing Rainbow
Basically the entire thing is Pinkie chasing Rainbow Dash to the Barn. However, Pinkie's hair WILL be deflated, even though it'll show only a pink and blue siloettes for the ponies.
Pinkie stops at the shut barn door, head-butt's the door, gives up, and goes home (quick transition from barn to home).
Show Rainbow Dash coming in through the heart door, Pinkie has a bit of a fight with Rainbow Dash, then Dash drags Pinkie over to the Barn (quick transition)
Needs to show other ponys explaning what the big secret was. (Her hair needs to stay deflated from this point on)
Then a day to night transition is nessisary.

7. Late Night Accident
----------------------
Normalish Style, but the video goes glitchy slightly to show evil pinkamina version of pinkie pie on a few frames, and back to pinkie pie.

"Later on, despite learning..." - show empty streets of ponyville, and Pinkie walking down them.
"The moon was high in the sky..." - Pan up from behind Pinkie to show the moon shining down on Pinkie.
"Pinkie was confused..." - Pinkie walks into an alley, and stops there.

"What am I to do?" - Pinkie singing to herself
"Is it safe to say I'm through?..." - Background fades to black
"No escape, I can't pretend..." - Close up on Pinkie singing.
"So once again I ask, what can I do?" - Pinkie lays down.
"(Hey Hey Pinkie...)" - her party of one friends talk to her in her mind (in the background behind Pinkie), and Pinkie's eyes open, and her pupils suddenly get smaller. Pinkie shakes it off, and they're normal again.
"What am I to say?" - Pinkie singing again.
"(Hey...)" - Her other party of one friends will fade in and out whenever there's background voices.
"Who would listen anyway?..." - Pinkie's pupils get smaller again.
"No one takes me seriously!" - Pinkie closes eyes and shakes her head.
"I give and give" - flashback of Pinkie's parties with her friends.
"just like daddy did abuse me" - Again, flashback of Pinkie's dad abusing Pinkie.
"13 days it took to find me" - Pinkie crying all alone
"Left my home and life behind me" - Siloette of Bon Bon walking up behind Pinkie
"Someone's sneaking up behind me!" - Pinkie Pie turns and jumps Bon Bon; pinning her down.
Pinkie Pie kills Bon Bon by strangling her to death.

Following that scene, show Bon Bon's dead corpse, and Pinkie Pie's heart beating. Pinkie shows tears, and show pinkie breaking apart inside, then finally giving up her sanity.

8. Hide the Body: Art of Distress
---------------------------------
Normal style, but very dark to the point that it's gruesome

Show a spotlight over Pinkie Pie and the dead pony. Pinkie Pie singing to the lyrics when they come up. Dunno if I'll have any change of scenery... probably constantly zooming in on pinkie pie or something. I dunno.

"I need to get rid of the evidence... somehow..." - Show a darker side of Pinkamina for a few frames...

(Small instrumental going into the art of the dress) - Fade to black. Show scenes of Pinkie Pie dragging the dead pony with her mouth.

"Step by step, checking every detail..." - Pinkie drags Bon Bon downstairs.
"Struggle as I place her on the table..." - Pinkie lifts Bon Bon on a table
"I'm under so much stress" - Pinkie sweats a bit, holding a knife over the corpse.

"Bare the neck..." - Pinkie cuts into Bon Bon's neck with the knife. Blood splatters onto camera for a sec.
"Smell the blood..." - show blood pour out of the neck, and Pinkie almost gagging.
"Trying not to care for consequences" - Pinkie walks away from the corpse
"Knowing that I have no good defences" - Pinkie grabs a recipe book
"Thinking hard of what I'm gonna make her" - she look through different recipes
"Though I know I'll have to clean up later" - Pinkie's facial expression shows that she found the recipe she was looking for, and drops the book.
"Silly little Pinkie..." - Pinkie grabs the knife again
"Time for Pinkamina to take over" - She walks back over to the corpse
"Finish up the job that we have started..." - Pinkie holds knife over corpse again. This time with a more insane face expression.
"Feed her to the vein and the coldhearted" - Pinkie starts cutting the body more fiercely. Blood splashes everywhere, including the camera again. Fades to black.
"Don't expect to hear that much rejection" - Pinkie throws some pieces onto a cupcake tray.
"Everypony loves our main confection" - Pinkie places cupcake rack into an oven. Oven door shuts, and screen goes black.

"(Cupcakes)" - Show the cupcakes already baked.
"So sweet and tasty" - Pinkie grabs a cupcake.
"Don't be to hasty" - Pinkie takes a bite of the cupcake.
"And if they like them" - Pinkie chews the cupcake some, and swallows.
"Then I'll still make them" - Pinkie tosses rest of cupcake in her mouth.
"I trust nopony" - Pinkie looks outside
"They all are phony" - Camera zooms outside the shop to see ponies walking the street.
"I know my target" - Show the ponies Twist, Holli Dash, Cloud Kicker, Lyra (looking worried/sad).
"I'll never forget..." - Pinkie looks up into the sky from the window.
"This is all her fault!" - Camera quickly pans up to see Rainbow Dash sleeping on a cloud in the sky.
"When I'm through with you..." - Pinkie looks back to the cupcakes she made. Camera inside shop again. Cupcakes in foreground.
"Rainbow Dash is gonna pay!" - Pinkie upclose shot lipsyncing the dialogue. reflection of rainbow cupcakes in her eyes.

9. Practice Makes Perfect (Crime)
---------------------------------
Animated Newspaper Style

EQUESTRIA DAILY NEWSPAPER
"The following morning..." - Article promoting Pinkie's cupcakes.
"They went over extremely well..." - Article review of Pinkie's delicious cupcakes.
"The normally sickening thought..." - Article showing Bonbon is missing. Written by Lyra.
"She felt great..." - Article by Pinkie Pie promoting her cupcakes, saying there will be more cupcakes next week with all new tasty flavours!"
"...take on the one who..." - show a silloette of Rainbow Dash faded over the newspaper. the silloette slowly zooms in and gets darker until the screen is black.

"The first pony..." - Article from the school saying Twist hasn't been seen at school recently, and the students, Cheerilee, and the parents are getting worried. Search parties have been sent out to check the Everfree Forest, and surrounding areas.
"The second, about a week later" - Article about another couple ponies (Holli Dash, and Cloud Kicker).
"Several other ponies disappeared..." - At least show Lyra is missing in one of the articles.
"Pinkie felt that she was ready..." - Article showing the outside to Sugarcube Corner. 'Pinkie Pie's cupcakes are best cupcakes!'

Zoom in on the image in the article, and show Rainbow dash flying down and going into the building.

10. And Now You Nap
-------------------
Normalish, with some grain

"So you ready to get started..." - Pinkie happily welcoming Dash into her shop... umm... yeah.
"You betcha, Pinkie!" - Camera on Dash. She does poses to each thing she mentions. 'pranks' and 'stunts.'
"Or maybe..." - Show Dash kinda thinking.
"Making cupcakes!" - Pinkie looking all excited and happy.
"Baking?" - Dash looks confused.
"Oh, that's not a problem at all..." - Pinkie talking.
"Oh alright, I guess that's okay..." - Dash looks more interested.
"That's the spirit! Here you go." - Pinkie looks happy, and gives Dash a cupcake.
"I thought I was helping you bake?" - Dash looks puzzled again, and takes the cupcake.
"You will be, I made this one just for you..." - Pinkie gives a bit of a evil smile.
"So is this like taste testing or something?" - Dash looks at the cupcake, and takes a bite out of it.
"Okay, now what?" - Dash talks...
"Now. You take a nap" - Pinkie gives a more evil smile. (taken from Dash's point of view) The screen will start to fade out, and almost kinda move off (following the movements of Dash).

11. Cupcakes
------------
Animated Ask Pinkamina Blog Style

At the start of Cupcakes, it will remain the same style as "and now you nap," and it'll show Rainbow Dash getting tired, and passing out... Then show Pinkamina dragging Dash into the celler.
During the break where there is no sound for about a second, the screen will be black, and it'll open up to Rainbow Dash's point of view. The stypie HERE will be the ask pinkamina style, and you watch Pinkamina talk/sing to you until the line "You're gonna die."

Dash awakens in the celler.
"Oh Dash, I'm glad you're here" - Show Pinkie happilly talking to you.

"As soon as your life is threatened" - flashback to the young fliers competition.
"You will cower, it's nothing new" - Flashback ends off when Dash is in fetal position.

"In the most satisfying of ways" - Show Dash crying and screaming.
"Let me look into your eyes" - Pinkie staring deeply at Dash's eyes.
"Let me see your soul" - Pinkie giving the ask pinkamina stare (oh fluttershy, you're such a LOUD MOUTH!). She also shoots Dash with a needle in her lower back. (Note: Might be hard to show, so if showing it, show for a half second, and then show dash's expression after)
"Show what it's like when a pony betrays" - Pinkie lowers the table to make it so Dash is on her back.
"Rip the flank, and leave it to whither" - Pinkie cuts Dash across her body

"DIE DIE DIE DIE... etc." - Start by ripping out intestines, pancreas, kidney, liver, bladder, stomach... and lastly Pinkie cutting up Dash's throat, and ripping her flesh off her skull. The actions are timed to each time "DIE" is said. After every "DIE" has been said, show Dash's remains, and Pinkie above her corpse... and zoom out of the basement, and back outside of sugarcube corner.

3D Animation Demo Reel - 2011

(Sadly, I have no idea how to keep this at the top of the front page of my blog without updating the date on this)

Something... Broke.

I'm actually talking about this song: Something Broke: The Continuing Tale of Pinkie Pie and Ponycide. It's a long song (20 minutes) but it's worth the listen... I wouldn't recommend it to a younger audience though since it has a vulgar word or two, and the imagery that this song brings out is quite brutal.

Why do I bring this up out of nowhere? I want to animate this song. All of it. For a month now, I've been wanting to do some sort animation project, and I've been thinking of using my character, and no ponies what-so-ever. HOWEVER... something just clicked in me a few nights ago. I had come up with several ideas on how I would storyboard several sections of this song, and it gave me a lot more motivation to actually start work on this. So, while I WAS going to do a simple 1 minute animation showing animation (I still have no idea what kind of animation), I would MUCH rather work on a 20 minute song that I have many ideas for that I'd love to try animating. It may take a several months to finish this project, but in the end, I hope it's worth it. Anyways, now I need to somehow fix my issue with my tablet in Flash so that I could actually draw in the program.

I'll also still be doing work on Aftermath Saga (supposed to build characters to use in a skeletal animation system) while working on this large animation project.

Starting Flash Animation Reel Project

After taking a little break from my previous project (I got pretty worn out from the non-stop working, and late nights), I have started to come up with ideas for my flash animation reel! So far, I am still trying to flesh out my concepts. Here's how I'm breaking it down:

-Characters to use:
-Jay Moonshadow
-One other human character (no idea)
-Moocow (NO PONI)

-Mime acting sequence
-I haven't thought this one through enough

-Dialogue sequence
-Showing I can do acting to dialogue
-I haven't decided on what audio yet

-Action sequence
-Shows a fast-paced fighting sequence or something

Each piece will be between 10 - 20 seconds in length. I don't particularly want a story to go with this, but I do want to use Jay Moonshadow (my main OC), and some other character (Still don't know, but it will be an OC for the use of this demo reel). Moocow is something I always wanted to go into one of my animations. I'm sad that I've never put it in anything since over a year ago. What is Moocow? It's just my OC cartoon cow that I've been drawing since late high school. I do plan on fleshing her out a bit more. It would be nice if I could animate her as good as "My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic." If I want to get into this industry, I'm going to need something really worth showing off. Err, I WAS actually thinking of having ponies, but I thought better of it. I can always do a pony animation some other time (I do have one in mind though, but it's not something kid friendly).

Update: I've been getting several good ideas recently from watching several cartoons and anime. I am able to see what Flash is capable of just by watching My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, and a Flash short that someone sent me to look at last night (after watching Star Wars EpIV again): "Mace Windu in Clone Wars." It's kinda weird that when some people think "Flash Animation," they think of stuff like Family Guy... and that really isn't that great of animation in my opinion. Flash is just another tool. You CAN do traditional animation in the program if the animator feels the need to. It's not always just simple motion tweens, and whatever. I also saw a very well done animation someone did of Pinkie Pie, and the animation looks a LOT like what I see in the actual show (this guy should get hired at Studio B imo). You can find that "here." I'm getting many inspiring ideas, and I'm getting a feeling that I should probably do a pony as well for my animation reel... just an animated short just like that one. I know I said I wouldn't, but I can't help my urges, ya know?

Hiya People

From what I can tell, the majority of the new people coming to this page were linked from my game, "Super Filly Adventure" on Newgrounds. Thank you for visiting! This blog was made to showcase my animation works and stuff I would show off to potential employers. I don't update this blog as often as I do my DeviantART though, so you can go check out that instead here: http://jay6-the-canadian.deviantart.com/. I have some of my traditional 2D animation pieces on the Animations page.

My next big project is to work on a game called "Aftermath Saga" (Essell Series). This one is a game being built by ground up. I'm not the one that's designing the game, but I'll be working closely with SC to draw up the graphics and make the animations. I haven't done a lot for the game yet, but I will be very soon. Blog link for this game is here: http://teamessell.blogspot.com/

------------------

Sorry if I disappoint some people when I say this, but I don't have the time to put effort into making a sequel right away to Super Filly Adventure. I don't really have one planned currently either, and I don't know where exactly I can go with it. As far as personal projects go, I want to make a 2D animation to use as my second animation demo reel. I was thinking of doing an animation to go with "Something Broke," but daaaaaaaamn it would be bloody/gory. That, and it's 20 minutes long of a song. I'd probably animate to the "Art of Distress" or "Cupcakes" parts of the song since I like those parts the best. What do you guys think? Yay/Nay? Have no idea what I'm talking about? Go listen to "Something Broke" here: http://soundcloud.com/mistarleadguitar/something-broke (May be disturbing for young ears)

And with that, I'll get right to work on Aftermath Saga.

Planning on a new demo reel

Today, I decided to start up a new project that I should do (after I'm finished with a minor project that I've neglected to work on recently). I decided I'd make a new demo reel to showcase my skills in Flash animation. So far, I've only really been teaching myself basic coding in flash to make games, but I haven't so much done much animation with the program. I'm sure that my traditional animation skills can carry over into flash, and I could make some good fluid animation. However, I need a few skits. I don't exactly know what to work with. I'm thinking that I should use cartoon animals. Backgrounds aren't my forte, but I'll need something like that eventually. My main focus would be animation (Key, and in-between). My ultimate goal with this demo reel would be to get into an animation studio. I'll have some acting animation, and some action animation (since I like that stuff). My schedule for this project will go as follows:

UPDATE: (Sept. 1, 2011) I didn't get my one huge project I'm working on done yet, so I'm putting off the demo reel for another half a month. I'm supposed to be done this game project by the 15th of this month, soo... I need all the time I can get. Sept 1: Pre planning
Sept 2: Have main idea done, roughing out character sketches
Sept 5: Have final character designs made, roughing out skit for acting animation
Sept 7: Finalize skit for acting, record skit
Sept 10: Storyboard the acting scene
Sept 14: Finalize the acting scene storyboard, getting it set up in Flash.
Sept 16: Create character rigs in Flash
Sept 18: Start key animation
Sept 21: Review key animation, and do in-between animation if all looks good.
Sept 25: Acting scene done. Start storyboard for action scene
Sept 29: Finalize the action scene storyboard, getting it set up in Flash.
Oct 3: Start key animation
Oct 7: Review key animation, and do in-between animation if all looks good.
Oct 14: Finish project.

There may be some delays, but that can't be helped. If I get it done early, that'd be a bonus. I don't plan for this to be all that long. I want to make something interesting enough that a company would look at it, and watch it for more than 15 seconds. I may have the whole thing be 30 seconds long, or maybe even a minute long at most. Like I said, I want this to be my second demo reel, and something that's dedicated to Flash animation.

Demo Reel Done!

Today marks the day that Ninja Summer Camp is complete! Check it out!

Ninja Summer Camp has been what I've been working on for a year. I've also had many other projects to work on while working on this big main one. I think I would have rather have done just a few little animations, like a walk cycle, simple 11 second animation piece, and I dunno, some fancy animations? Either way, I did try to do most of that in Ninja Summer Camp. Although it is Lip-sync heavy, there is a run cycle, there is a walk, there is acting, it's got pretty much everything that I wanted to do. On the fire walking scene, I wanted to include "burning coals," live by having glowing spots here and there, but I couldn't figure out how to do it really. The smoke itself took forever to render out. With just the smoke, I think it looks pretty good. Another thing I wanted to add would be a depth of field shader, where I'd have most things in the background out of focus, unless it references things in the background. I didn't get to do that though. If I have time in the future, I'll experiment with that a bit.

I've done a few things recently

It's true that my demo reel animation (Ninja Summer Camp) isn't rendered yet, nor is all the textures complete, nor is the animation itself quite finished (I want to fix scene 2 for sure), but I've done a few other things on the side. I believe my time was well spent too.

For one, I've made a simple character rig for Game Production Workshop. No textures on it yet, but it'll have cel shading. I don't normally do modeling, but eh, I'd say this was a good attempt. The rig works exactly how I wanted it to as well. I didn't add any stretch though. The model is actually done in pieces, rather than enveloped. This wasn't too difficult, but I had a hard time remembering how to rig.

Another thing that I've been doing is working on 2D sprites. I used to make sprites a long time ago, and they weren't all that great. However, ever since I've been to CATO, I've learned more things about animation, character design, and all that stuff. So, I decided that I'd take my skills back into sprite making, and see how far I've gone. Even though these are just idle animations, they're looking pretty good from my perception.

I'm making these sprites for an action game that a friend of mine is making. These idle sprites are still beta. I've also got a rough run cycle going with one of the characters. It's pretty fluid, but it's still rough. One of my goals are to make idle animations for each character with each weapon they use. The main goal is to make sprites for every action each character does with each weapon, such as movements, attacks, etc.. This is a fairly large project, and I rarely have the time at the moment to work on sprites.

However, there's another project that we're working on that uses smaller sprites, and it's for a different type of game; an SRPG.

This is only a concept sprite, not a final version. I should make a side sprite as well. Weapons will be handled on a separate layer from the character sprite. The game will have 32x32 tiles, so having 32x32 sprites is ideal. We plan on having this game for a portable device. Not quite sure about iPhone yet.

For all I know, Aftermath Saga will take several years to make (game using the larger sprites). We're pretty much a two man army, and we're limited in our skills. Mercenary Saga is ideal to release first since the sprites are simpler to make, and overall, it's just easier to create an SRPG. I don't know what I'm going to do for when a character goes into battle. He mentioned that it should be Fire Emblem style, or Disgaea style... I'm not sure how everything will work out yet. We plan to keep things 16-bit for Mercenary Saga. There are several other game ideas for the same series (Essell Series), but we're keeping to these two for now. Until we can get a bigger team, we'll be pretty slow moving, and we'll be working on these games on our spare time.

SCENE 1, 2, 3, and 5 UPDATE! (March 19, 2011)

Woo! Lots of things to update today! Scene 1 I touched up on Thursday. I didn't update my blog until now though. I DO have a better rendered version, but that will have to wait until I put it all together.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW SCENE 1

Scene 2 took WAY longer than it should have... and yet, I dunno. It's at least better than it was previously. The arms are actually animated! (Animation layers saved me on this >.>)

CLICK HERE TO VIEW SCENE 2

Scene 3 is still in the works. This is the only scene that isn't exactly complete. I hope to do this scene this weekend. Wish me luck! (Holy hell the fire walk is hard to animate! @_@)

CLICK HERE TO VIEW SCENE 3 (or whatever I have of it)

Scene 5 is working out... I don't really get what Derek was saying about the "GUAR-AN-TEE" part, but apparently he didn't like it, while everyone else seemed to like it. Confusing critique. >_>; Oh well, I did what I could. It followed my reference well enough I thought. Also, Moom is a bit more animated. What happens to Moom in the end wasn't intentional, but eh, I guess it replaces the gag from scene 4.

CLICK HERE TO VIEW SCENE 5

If you're wondering about Scene 4, well, it's not gonna happen. For some reason, these 4 scenes take up plenty enough time on their own. Scene 4 had to be scrapped. I do apologize to those who really wanted to see Moom get decapitated by a shuriken.

I really can't wait until next week... I'll finally have some free time for once! ;_;

Pi Day update (3/14/2011)

I decided I'd show what I have of the whole reel so far.

DOWNLOAD

For some reason, the audio doesn't seem to have the right sync. It's not a HUGE worry though. It's just a matter of moving the audio a frame or two. The music will need to be re-edited.

Scene 3 is currently what I'm working on. The fire walk animation. That... is pretty difficult. I just recorded some reference of myself to hopefully help with what I'm animating:

Scene 3 will be worked on this week, and if I have time, I will get around to working on tweaking all of the scenes to near-perfection (I will try for perfection).

Scene 5 - Updated further (March 9, 2011)

Guy's animation is there, and Guy's lip-sync is there. all that's left now is to fix up Moom's run a bit more, and then I can move on. Honestly though, Guy's animation in this scene was probably the EASIEST thing I've done in this whole demo reel. I'm eager to start working on Scene 3 again, and finally finishing that up.

For now, have a look at Scene 5 (nearing completion):

Scene 3 is still in the very early stages of blocking... still a lot to do in that scene. I think the fire walk itself may actually be the hardest part of the whole demo reel. I better get to it.

Scene 5 Update - March 7, 2011

I've been working on Scene 5 (closing scene) for the last few days. I think I've got Moom's running and jumping finished, but I still need to animate him falling, and getting crushed under the cabin. That'll come after I finish Sensei's animation in Scene 5. I've done SOME work on scene 4, but not enough to get it critiqued. I've also done some work fixing Scene 2, but it's unfinished, and it's a mess right now.

For now, here's a close-up of Moom's run and jump animation:

And here's what everyone would see of Moom from the actual camera in Scene 5:
NOTE: Camera movement isn't final. I think I did a shitty job implementing the changes made to the camera. Moom used to be jumping a lot higher (basically jumping to the moon and back within a second), and that I changed the timing for when Moom appears on camera. It will be changed in the next capture. The other reason I changed the camera was because my original camera didn't show Guy's body all that much (it just showed his head at the bottom of the screen), so I found a better camera angle to show Guy and Moom better in this scene. The trees are also hidden for now. Cabins still don't have a finalized texture, but that's not my main concern.

The next plan of action is to block in Guy's animation in Scene 5. I had a block in of Guy V1, but that was from 3 months ago. I have some actual video reference for it now.

Scene 3 also has some video reference of Guy. I have reference for someone fire-walking, and failing, but it's not the greatest. For some reason, it's hard finding reference for people failing a fire walk. However, I will do the best I can with what I have.

Scene 1 (Finished! March 1)

I'm calling Scene 1 finished. Or rather, it's my Scene 1 - V1.0. It's all there, it's animated. I'm moving on. I'll render out Scene 2 after I fix up what needs to be fixed, and when I've got time to kill. Scene 3 and scene 5 are my next priorities for the next 3 weeks.

Scene 2 (I'll say it's complete. Feb. 25, 2011)

This is probably the closest I've gotten to completing Scene 2's animation. Guy's lip-sync is there, and the animation is getting closer to being final... however, now I'm stumped with a random glitch that my Guy V2 rig has. When he animates his arms in IK, they work just fine. However, when animating in FK, it seems to work, at least until you go to capture the animation, or quickly scrub through the animation. The left arm will either explode, or implode. I figured one of the problems had to do with the stretchy arms, but well, this is the best I could get it. Only the left arm is animated partially in FK.

Before I move on to finishing Scene 1, I'm going to draw up an exposure sheet. For some reason, my thoughts are better organized on an exposure sheet than they are when I look at the Keys or FCurves on the time-line. So that'll be my approach to finish the rest of my demo reel.

EDIT (Feb 25, 2011): I found the problem with the GuyV2. It turns out that any amount of stretchiness caused by IK will affect FK somehow. I made the decision to animate all of Guy's left arm in FK, and that seemed to fix the problem for when I capture it. However, if I do jump frames, there's still some glitchiness happening, and that is something I cannot fix now. For now, I will call Scene 2 done, but there are still a few things I can improve with it, and that will have to wait for later. Right now, I'm in the process of re-animating Scene 1 (more or less from the ground up). All of the jaw movement is in, the head and body movement is finally done. Now I need to fix the eye movement, completely re-animate the arm/hand movement, and get the lip-sync done. After that, I'll say Scene 1 is done, and I'll move on to doing Scene 3. No progress video until I say it's complete.

New stuff... updated voices mainly.

Most recent update (Feb 14, 2011):

 Scene 2 (Moom falling WIP)
In my opinion, the timing is still a bit off. The pauses need to be a bit longer. The falling part needs something more too. I can't exactly put my finger on what it needs though. I plan on making the ninja kid bounce a bit when he makes impact with the ground.

Full reel so far: (No music or sound effects. No titles either. Does not include the proper Moom falling animation)

Scene 1

Scene 2

I'm way behind schedule, but I have my reasons. I'm working on perfecting the animation as much as possible before continuing on to the next part. I'm also working on something else that's important. I'm making sprites for a client of mine. I swear, he wants me to pull out 10,000 sprites, but he wont need them right away... he still would want me to make at least 1 per day. I love making sprites, so it's best that I put my efforts into this as well. I'll show off what I'm doing once I produce enough sprites. Who knows, it could also be part of my demo reel.

Scene 4 (Shuriken Scene) is getting cut. Also: Finalized voices! (Feb 3, 2011)

It has come to my attention that the shuriken scene really isn't needed, and kinda degrades my animated short. I've thought about it for about a week, and finally, I've decided to cut it entirely. The reason it isn't needed is because it doesn't really add anything new, but rather, it kinda just contributes mediocrity. On my first storyboard, I had 6 different scenes. The fire walk scene was a water run scene, the shuriken scene had 2 different ninja kids and an awkward camera angle, and I mixed the fifth scene with the final scene. I guess the only reason I had that one shuriken scene in there was to fill the time slot because I thought it was supposed to be a minute long. Obviously that isn't the case, rather. The shorter the animation, the better. Also, with this scene cut, I'll be able to focus on perfecting the animation for each scene, rather than rushing to get everything done in time. Quality > quantity. So, I'll need to adjust my schedule.

Another thing: I have finalized voices now. I'm still the voice of Yamato Sensei, and I got Ian to voice the disclaimer. Right now, I'm getting the timing and mouth positions down for the lipsync. I'll post new videos of my demo reel once I get all the new voices planted into each scene. Also need to do some fixing up with my blocking for Scene 1 and 2.

Demo Reel - Progress (Jan 26)

I admit, I'm falling behind now. However, I plan to make it up in the next week. I was hoping to have the blocking out done, but I only got half of the blocking out done for Scene 1. I realize that giving myself a day to do the entire blocking out for 2 scenes (~20 seconds of animation) wasn't enough time.

Anyways, I have reference of myself to show off, and part of my Scene 1. For the reference in Scene 2, I don't think I even know how to swing a sword. I keep spinning around... maybe it's because the prop I was using was too long (almost damaging the apartment! =D ). Either way, I slowed myself down for the last few takes... I guess no matter what, he'd take a step forward, and face his back to the camera when he slashes the sword.

I was going to film myself sacking myself for reference of Moom falling and getting sacked, but I have 2 problems with that. 1. Even though the reference would be of someone (me) actually getting sacked, I would have to exaggerate it a lot to make it look animated for animation purposes. 2. It would hurt like hell, so there's no way I'm going to do that to myself. If the reference I get for it isn't good enough, then my efforts would be wasted, and I would have sacked myself for nothing. Sooooooooo no. I'll just look up reference on the good 'ol internet/youtube.

For all the times I do weird things in my references, it's just what I did to keep myself sane while gathering reference, and it'll keep me sane while animating. The other reason why I'm leaving in this much footage for my reference is also because some gestures read better in other takes. It's best to use all of what I've got, no?

All of the animation I have so far is still rough. I don't plan to have it fully animated until, at the very least, a week. So far, I've only got Scene 1 blocked. I'll be doing the blocking for Scene 2 soon enough.

Update on a few things

I'm a bit ahead of schedule, or rather, on schedule. I finished making a tighter shot and the camera animation for the balancing scene (Scene 2). I almost decided to add cuts to this scene to break it up more, but it wouldn't give me the feeling I wanted. It's supposed to be made as a home video. So likewise, I looked up home video reference on the internet, and there are plenty of resources. I used a couple Mindthink Springs, and constrained the camera root to it. To make it so that the camera didn't go everywhere when it moves, I stiffened the springs to around 1.00 for the bottom one, and .90 for the top spring. The springs are just to add to the shakiness, but I don't want it to be too distracting. Also, I put Guy V2 into my scene, and of course, nothing is animated yet. Everything in this scene is still rough.

If you can't tell what he's doing in this scene, well, I gave Guy a sword prop. he'll be using that to slice the bamboo, and then walk off screen.

EDIT: New update! I finished the camera animation for the Fire Walk scene (Scene 3). Same method used. Basically I'm adding a tighter shot on Moom to show his animation better. On the down side, it shows less of Guy, but on the plus side, I don't have to do his gesture animation for that portion the camera is looking at just Moom. I should be done with the next scene's camera animation very soon too... but I'll rest for now.

Another update: I met my milestone for Jan. 19. Scene 4 (Shuriken scene) camera animation is done. If it doesn't read well yet, it may yet once there are key animations implemented. For now, there will be a lack of animation. Feedback would always be nice.

Sorry, forgot to upload Scene 5's camera animation. I also attempted making the cabin collapse ahead of schedule. The cabin animation very rough right now, but it gets the idea across better than it did in my storyboards, or previous renders.

Demo Reel Animation Schedule

Alright! I've got a schedule going, and I really hope to keep on it as much as possible. If I miss a deadline, I still want to get it all done before each Milestone. I'm really hoping to get all my stuff done by the end. In my last week, I have a few things that are kinda optional to do for this quarter, and doesn't really have anything to do with the actual animation itself.
I just got finished making the new Guy V2 Sensei. I think it would be better/easier working with him rather than Guy V1, so that's why I made such decision.

As for the tighter shot on Balancing Scene, I feel that it didn't have a good shot originally. I should be showing the ninja kid a bit more basically. Also, to account for the tighter shot, I need to re-animate the camera movements. I only just started trying to get the tighter camera to work, and now I'll need to have the animation working too. The way I have it to be set up is that it will show the ninja kid first, then have the camera move over to show Guy Sensei talking. Also, to take into account with Guy being a lot closer to the ninja kid, he isn't going to throw a shuriken. Rather, I added something to Guy's costume: A sword. I'll have him horizontally slice the bamboo, then walk off screen. I remember back when I made my first storyboard, I had a lot better shots for this scene. I don't know why my teacher didn't want that. -_-

Also, the camera didn't really move at all on the Fire walk scene, and now that I think about it, it needs some sort of animation. Perhaps zooming in on the ninja kid more, since that's where the animation is. That's about it.

Then lip-sync is something I find VERY easy to do. It'd probably be a lot easier to do lip-sync before animating the guy. May take me 5 hours to do all that lip-sync, or maybe slightly longer. I don't have an estimate. It's just the lip-sync, and not all the gestures itself. So just facial animation for now.

EDIT: Update on the schedule, I moved the lip-sync for after finishing the gesture animation. My teacher said it'd make more sense this way... and he wouldn't accept it otherwise. Also added in a Blocking column. That's the date I plan to finish blocking in the animation, then if I need to make some fix-ups, I'll do it asap, then finish the animation.
